Ok ✕LEXINGTON, Ky. (December 5, 2019) – Space Tango successfully launched two CubeLab investigations today on the nineteenth SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services Mission (CRS-19) to the International Space Station (ISS).
Stem Cells in Space – National Stem Cell Foundation (NSCF), Aspen Neuroscience, New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) Research Insititute
The NSCF-funded collaboration between researchers at NYSCF and Aspen Neuroscience will perform a study on long-term cell cultures of patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) neural organoids with microglia on the ISS to study Parkinson’s disease and primary progressive multiple sclerosis in microgravity.
This innovative approach to modeling disease has the potential to provide valuable new insight into the fundamental mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders that may accelerate biomarker discovery and potential new drug and cell therapy options for patients.
Anheuser-Busch
Space Tango partner Anheuser-Busch will examine Barley’s malting process (steeping, germination, and kilning) in microgravity. Not only does this contribute to their Bud on Mars mission, but this investigation may provide insight on sugar production during the malting process. Results could potentially impact agricultural sustainability efforts on Earth as well as improve our understanding of potential crop production in space.
These CRS-19 payloads mark Space Tango’s 82nd and 83rd payloads transported to the ISS since installing the first TangoLab facility in August 2017 and a second in August 2018.
