Ok ✕LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 30, 2023) – Space Tango is supporting DARPA’s multitrack program, Biomanufacturing: Survival, Utility, and Reliability beyond Earth (B-SURE), that aims to identify and address challenges associated with biomanufacturing in space. They are participating in the “Alternative Feedstock Track” that uses data from other program participants and publicly available sources to answer questions about biomanufacturing’s logistic and economic viability in low-Earth orbit (LEO).
Supporting over 200 automated research investigations on the International Space Station (ISS) since 2017, Space Tango’s experience comprises mission operations, hardware development, and data retrieval for various research and manufacturing use cases. As a leading industry program participant, Space Tango using this expertise to develop a cloud-based platform to share data securely between B-SURE program participants.
To best understand the impact of using microorganisms to ensure a sustainable future for space stations, Space Tango has contracted Sierra Space, a leading developer of next-generation commercial space stations, is providing Space Station Operational Modeling to determine the effectiveness of biomanufacturing using different alternative feedstocks. Select university researchers are providing their bioreactor studies transforming these feedstocks, such as human and plastic waste, with different microorganisms and then depositing those transformation rates into Space Tango’s platform for Sierra Space to use in the modeling.
“B-SURE is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the collaborative efforts between federal and private organizations to enable a sustainable economy in LEO,” said Dr. Alain Berinstain, Space Tango Chief Strategy Officer. “We’re applying what we’ve learned from years of supporting ISS investigations as we prepare to utilize commercial space stations after the ISS retires.”
